In January 2000, former Gov. Roy Barnes appointed Mr. Head to a national symposium dealing with “Aggressive Driving”. The Symposium was coordinated by NHTSA ( National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration) in Washington, DC. He was elected National Chairman of the 200+ member Symposium. In connection with this, he made a presentation to the Lifesavers 2000 Conference in March 2000. Mr. Head was one of the original twelve Regents who started the National College for DUI Defense, Inc in 1995. He is a retired Regent at this time. He also holds "Life Member" status in the NACDL, GACDL, and SCACDL. He is also a member of the ATLA, the ABA, the Atlanta Bar Association, and the Gwinnett County Bar Association and is founder of two national web sites for DUI-DWI trial attorneys, www.DrunkDrivingDefense.com and www.DUI-DWI.com. He is certified to operate an Intoxilyzer 5000 breath testing instrument and owns the model of the Intoxilyzer 5000 used in Georgia. He also received factory certification to operate the BAC Datamaster infrared breath testing instrument in 2004. He has produced a 90-minute videotape on crime laboratory testing methods and procedures in conjunction with the University of Tennessee Medical School, Department of Toxicology in April of 2000. Mr. Head holds a certificate of completion for the Robert F. Borkenstein Course on Alcohol, Drugs, and Highway Safety: Testing, Research, and Litigation based out of Indiana University at Bloomington and is a provisional member of the International Association for Chemical Testing (IACT) as well as member of the jurisprudence section of the American Academy of Forensic Scientists (AAFS).
In 1994, Mr. Head sponsored the first training program in America that enabled defense attorneys to be certified practitioners in the NHTSA standardized field sobriety tests [SFSTs]. He also sponsored the first certification course for defense attorneys for the Intoxilyzer 5000 breath machine in 1996. He then sponsored the first 40-hour certification course that allowed defense attorneys to become certified as SFST instructors. In 1998, he sponsored and enrolled in a comprehensive Blood and Urine Testing training seminar held in Lake Tahoe. In 2005, he sponsored the first DRE Overview Course for criminal defense attorneys and the first SFST Advanced Update Course for attorneys. He is not only an SFST instructor now, but helps teach other defense attorneys (including public defenders at no cost) every year. In the cover story for Atlanta Magazine (March, 2000), Mr. Head was recognized as the state’s "best DUI lawyer" based upon a survey of Georgia lawyers. He has also been named one of Georgia’s “Super Lawyers” every year that this designation has been awarded by Law & Politics Magazine. He has also been named as one of Georgia’s “Legal Elite” by Georgia Trend Magazine.
